SCENIC ESCAPE

At ***, life moves a little slower. Beyond towering trees, you'll find a peaceful sanctuary where folks can breathe in the coastal air and breathe out their problems. When owners *** and *** discovered their love for hosting and entertaining back in 2005, they opened up their home into a B&B, which then evolved into a village of themed tiny houses. Lots has changed over the past decade, but their vision never has: It’s about conversations, it’s about family, and it’s about community.

COFFEE SHOP

Welcome, poets. Welcome, visual artists. Welcome, creatives of all kinds, to your home away from home. Since opening in early 2018, *** has become the place where culture and community converge in the heart of *** Park. More than a cafe, we’re a gallery for local artists, a stage for local performers, and a gathering place for everyone. Our crop-to-cup experience begins on independent coffee farms as we set out to support Ethiopian farmers and connect you with transparent, traceable coffee. From harvest to roast to that first morning sip, we care.

DOGGIE DAY CARE

*** is your pup’s day care destination for a tail-wagging good time. As dog owners ourselves, we became increasingly frustrated trying to find trustworthy, quality care for our pets -- so we opened our own day care and boarding facility to offer just that. Instead of spending a long day caged up while you’re away, your pup will have an entire fun-filled afternoon to roam, play, or simply lounge in our indoor/outdoor center.

FINDING THEIR VOICES
Feature

A torrent of guitar, keyboard, and the unmistakable harmony of a gospel choir reverberate through the walls of Asbury United Methodist Church. Over a dozen young adults line the stage inside, bouncing on their toes in excitement as they sing. Their voices join to crescendo at the chorus, repeating over and over, “I would not be where I am without You.”

Several people raise their hands into the air. Others sway with their eyes closed. No one in the room is unaffected by the music. Indeed, they would not be where they are now without Zion’s Voice, a gospel choir for young adults in the Richmond area.

TAKING THE INITIATIVE
Feature

Twice a week, Johnathan Bean, a senior at Huguenot High School, does not board the bus after school with the rest of his classmates. After the final bell rings, he strolls into another full classroom and plops his bag onto a table in the front row. Today his shirt reads ‘Babe Magnet.’ He is all smiles as he jokes around with his friend, then settles down to flip through a booklet of math problems.

Bean has high hopes for college next year: Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, James Madison University. He is confident the only thing standing in his way of his dream school is his score on the Scholastic Aptitude Test.

ESL IN RICHMOND PUBLIC SCHOOLS
News

Fifty students squeeze into a classroom designed for 20 on the second floor of Huguenot High School. Their teacher, Kirsten Buist, shakes her head in frustration while they whisper to each other instead of doing their homework.

“No Spanish,” she snaps.

In this English-as-a-Second Language class, Buist knows exactly who the troublemakers are. But keeping the huge class on task is a full-time job, not leaving her a chance to identify those who are struggling the most.

DISCURSO DEL ESTADO DE LA UNIÓN
Noticias

Elizabeth Guzmán, una delegada de la Casa de Virginia, dijo a los hispanohablantes en una respuesta abrasadora al Estado de la Unión que el presidente Donald Trump no ha cumplido sus promesas de una América segura y unida.
